China has been holding classified F-35 stealth parts in Hong Kong since late May 2026.

A UPS employee missed a DSV warning email saying the shipment couldn't transit restricted countries under ITAR. The cargo, a cockpit canopy and weapons-bay door from an Australian F-35, went from South Korea straight into Hong Kong on a routine Asian route.

Both parts are coated in classified radar-absorbing material. Lockheed Martin and the Pentagon call them unserviceable and low risk. Congress is investigating whether the stealth coating recipe is compromised.

F-35 parts shipped out of Australia and bound for the United States were rerouted to Hong Kong, raising the possibility of Chinese access to the jet's technology. The shipment included a canopy with radar-resistant technology. Politico first reported the diversion on Saturday, adding that Lockheed Martin used a third company to move the components. Who holds the equipment now, and why it was rerouted, remains unclear.

Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles confirmed the incident Tuesday: "We're not talking about sensitive equipment here or sensitive parts. Ultimately, though, this is an issue which is going to be managed by the United States and by Lockheed in terms of what has occurred."

Marles said Canberra is examining everything that occurred at the Australian end and is working with Washington and Lockheed Martin, which manages the F-35 global supply chain.
