Country in Middle East

Syria

Syria is a country in West Asia, bordering Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, and Israel. Known for its prolonged civil war, the Assad regime's fall in late 2024, and its role as a transit corridor for Iranian arms to Hezbollah. Recently, Syria under President Ahmad al-Sharaa has pursued international reengagement, security negotiations with Israel, and efforts to curb weapons smuggling across its borders. Israeli military:

"Overnight (Tuesday), three Israeli civilians arrived at the Mount Hermon area and crossed the border into Syrian territory. IDF soldiers were dispatched to the area to locate them and returned them to Israeli territory.

The detained civilians were transferred to the Israel Police for further handling.

The IDF strongly condemns such incidents, which constitute an additional incident that disturbs the soldiers’ operational activity in the area and puts them in danger.

The law enforcement authorities are required to bring those involved to justice and to prevent those individuals from repeatedly engaging in this incident, which constitutes a criminal offense."

A year and eight months after the IDF declared the Syrian air force destroyed, Israeli defense officials say Syria has significantly accelerated its rebuilding in recent weeks.

In the past day, Syria carried out its first exercise of its kind using fighter jets in the north of the country.

Under a-Sharaa, Syria is receiving support from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Russia, France and other states in the region. Despite talk of a future security agreement with Israel, defense officials are tracking developments that could harm Israeli freedom of action over Syrian skies.

Syria's Civil Aviation Authority has taken over the Hmeimim international airport in Latakia from Russia, saying work has begun to prepare it for flights.

The handover follows a Syria-Russia deal on the fate of Russian bases, under which civilian infrastructure passes to Damascus while military facilities become joint training centers.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan:

Israel's attacks targeting Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity are one of the most serious threats to the country's stability.

The international community must demonstrate a stronger response in the face of Israel's occupying mentality.

It must apply the necessary pressure to ensure compliance with the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement and respect for Syria's sovereignty.

Leaders

Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem: "A stable Syria supports Lebanon, just as a stable Lebanon supports Syria."

Qassem said a public meeting between Hezbollah and Syria's leadership faces no obstacle and can be held when both sides see fit. He also credited the "memorandum of understanding signed between Iran and the United States" as the path to an IDF withdrawal from Lebanon.
