Andrei Klepach, chief economist at Russia's state development bank VEB.RF, has been fired after his blunt assessment of the war went viral.

He added that Russia is falling behind "not only to China and the United States - -- in some respects, we are losing it to Ukraine," and predicted a social crisis "when no one particularly expects it," comparing it to the 1917 revolution and the Soviet collapse.
The firing came one day after Russian media widely picked up the quotes. Sources say VEB's chairman acted after "a call from above."
