IDF: An unarmed suspected Hamas operative was detained by soldiers after approaching the Kerem Shalom border crossing in southern Gaza. Troops were sent to the area after suspicion of a Hamas presence on the Gaza side. The suspect was taken for questioning and his identity is under review. The military emphasized no infiltration into Israeli territory took place.
IDF Officer Indicted for Gaza Smuggling
An IDF lieutenant has been indicted for smuggling a truck full of contraband into Gaza through Kerem Shalom in exchange for ~5 million shekels ($1.6M).
The officer, a deputy company commander, personally escorted the truck through the crossing on September 19, ordering soldiers to let it pass. He's charged with aiding the enemy, bribery, and smuggling.
The IDF says it views smuggling by military personnel as a grave risk to state security.
