Iraq

Iraq is a sovereign state in Western Asia, bordered by Iran, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. Known for its vast oil reserves, sectarian political divisions, and its role as an arena for U.S.-Iran proxy competition. Recently, Iraq has been a flashpoint for drone and militia attacks, U.S. strikes on Iran-backed militias, Israeli covert operations, and renewed U.S.-Iraq diplomatic engagement. Erbil is back on the radar tonight.

The U.S. maintains forces at Erbil Air Base, one of its main military hubs in Iraq. The base has been repeatedly targeted by Iran backed militias.

Videos circulating online appear to show multiple drones launched toward Erbil, with several reportedly intercepted by U.S. air defenses. Footage also suggests at least 1 drone may have made it through, though this has not been independently verified.

Side note: it looks like the U.S. has upgraded the air defenses protecting the base.

Economy

Iraq has placed Hezbollah in Lebanon and terror-linked entities on its banking sanctions list, following an American request to the Iraqi government.

The designation was issued under amended Executive Order 13224 on combating terrorism, targeting the financing and logistical support networks the group relies on. The circular came from the Director General of the Economic Department and the head of the Iraqi Fund for External Development.

A man close to Hezbollah was arrested for allegedly spying for Israel, a Lebanese judicial official told AFP. Mohammad Ali Shamseddine was detained at Beirut airport while preparing to fly to Iraq. The official says he used trips between Iraq and Turkey to meet people linked to Mossad and pass on targets in Beirut. His proximity to senior Hezbollah figures gave him access to internal movements and intelligence, later tied to the killing of several commanders, including four senior security figures.
