"On May 17, 2026, U.S. Africa Command, in coordination with the Government of Nigeria, conducted additional kinetic strikes against ISIS in Northeastern Nigeria.
Intelligence confirmed the targets were ISIS militants. Complete assessments are ongoing. No U.S. or Nigerian forces were harmed."
AFRICOM Warns Al-Qaeda Reemerging in Africa
ICYMI: Earlier this month, AFRICOM Commander Gen. Dagvin Anderson warned that al-Qaeda is reemerging as a major threat in Africa.
He said JNIM, al-Qaeda’s Sahel affiliate, had launched complex attacks across Mali and publicly declared its intent to seize Bamako.
“That should give people chills,” Anderson said, comparing the tactic to ISIS’s takeover of Mosul.

AFRICOM Recovers Missing U.S. Soldier
AFRICOM says the remains of 1 of the 2 U.S. soldiers missing off Morocco during Exercise African Lion 26 have been recovered and identified as 1st Lt. Lamont Key Jr. The search for the second soldier is ongoing, with more than 1,000 U.S. and Moroccan personnel involved.
